Oakville cheerleading coach charged with sexual assault

An Oakville cheerleading coach is facing sexual assault charges after a 16-year-old girl alleged an inappropriate sexual relationship with a man at the Cheerforce Wolfpack training centre in Oakville.

The girl contacted Halton police Sunday (June 15).

Following an investigation by the Halton Regional Police Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Bureau, a suspect was arrested Tuesday.

Jonathan O'Brien, 25, of Grimsby, Ont., is facing charges including sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in Milton court on Tuesday, July 15.

An Oakville cheerleading organization says that effective immediately they no longer employ an Oakville cheerleading coach who is facing sexual assault charges.

The statement, which was posted on the CheerForce Inc. Facebook page, comes only hours after Halton police announced that a man is facing multiple charges after a 16-year-old girl alleged an inappropriate sexual relationship with a man at the Cheerforce Wolfpack training centre in Oakville.

"We are shocked and saddened due to the recent developments and are cooperating fully with the investigation," reads the post on the Facebook page.

"The health and safety of all CheerForce athletes are of paramount importance, and we will continue to provide the best possible cheerleading experience for athletes at CheerForce.

The Tuesday arrest of the cheerleading coach follows an investigation by the Halton Regional Police Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Bureau.

Jonathan O'Brien, 25, of Grimsby, Ont., is facing charges including sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Of course, considering that there is the possibility of 'dangerous liasons' with young cheerleaders, it would be best to move him to a desk/administration job or even suspend him until the trial and the judgement, but instead they opt for the quick 'pull it right off' job of firing him.

Agree. So far he has been charged, but has not been proven in a court of law.  Yet he has already occurred the full wrath and judgment even before the facts have come to light

A 25yo had sex with a 16yo? So what? He was her coach but still, I have seen relationships with this age difference right in the open and it wasn't such a big deal with many people. I mean, shtt, a Lost actor made news by marrying a 16yo being in his fifties himself.

Ouch! If this really happened it sucks that she would go off telling people. If it didn't then it sucks even more. They can do some sort of The Teacher thing and catch her on record admitting it's a lie. Wonder what the motive would be.
