Marques, the son of a Brazilian father and Irish mother, was born in New York but moved to Ireland when he was five.

He was arrested in 2013 at an apartment in Dublin's Mountjoy Square on foot of a request from the FBI, which conducted an extensive investigation into his activities.

This is one of the longest, most interesting sagas in darknet child porn history.  Eric Marques ran Freedom Hosting a decade ago; the hosting service for nearly all on-topic darkweb sites at the time, including this one.  When the authorities caught up to him, it created the single most significant blackout in the history of darkweb child porn.  If my memory is correct, only the version of Boy Vids that was around in 2013 survived (maybe some long-dead chats survived too).  It took a few months for new sites to come online or for sites to come back with different hosts.

The Freedom Hosting take-down marked the end of two significant child porn sites: Lolita City and OPVA (the Onion Pedo Video Archive).  Lolita City was an attempt to catalogue and tag as many child erotica images as could be collected via crowd sourcing.  To this day, one will still encounter batched images and individual pictures with file names that start with "LC".  These are from Lolita City.  And OPVA was a direct video hosting service for child porn. Anyone could upload a video and a thumbnail image would be automatically generated.  The search function wasn't great and you'd see a ton of renamed videos, but it was a trip to scroll through every day to see what had been uploaded.  It was completely random; whatever users were upping at the time.  Girls, boys, teens, toddlers, fetishes of all kinds involving children; you never knew what shit would be there every day.  The mods only ever removed content with all adults, if I remember correctly.

Marques fought extradition to the United States for years but eventually lost.  This sentencing is the culmination of that extradition.  He'll die in prison in America, in all likelihood.
