The news likes to exaggerate. In actuality, he had 58 Terabytes of storage. But, it was not all filled with CP. "Thousands" of images and videos hardly adds up to 58Tb.

Now, it could be possible if one is running a file server, allowing other people to upload and share files. But, that will invariably result in a lot of duplicate files and data as things get shared over and over.

Does 58 Terabytes of unique CP material actually exist? It is possible, but it is very hard to tell. The majority of CP is never shared publicly. Lots of people could have private stashes of their own movies and pictures. But 50Tb is quite a lot of material. That equates to over 20,000 hours of HD feature length movies.

I completely believe that there is 50 times more bytes worth of CP out there then what I once had at one point years ago.  No doubt about it.  Based on anecdotes I've read about file sizes and video quality, a 'studio' like Polar Lights must have at least a couple terabytes on it's own. 

As to one individual having that much; it's a stretch (and clearly not supported by the article itself) but I think if someone has been at it for 20 years and has been rather careless about duplicates, I think it's plausible to accumulate that much.
Because this is news story from the US, non-nude content of children becomes 'child porn' if it is stored along side actual child porn.  So one could add a mountain of non-nude 'modeling' material to the pile and help reach 58 TB.

Well, it's not impossible. Linux's limit of partitions is 60. This also means 60 hard disks, each of 4 TB space - that's the maximum size of a hard disk (not SSD) I have even heard of. He had 58 TB, which is roughly 15-18 hard disks. Considering some of the videos with Polly I recently found were at least 4GB in size and she's not the only girl out there with videos of her own, it's not that hard to fill 58 TB.
Frankly I'm more surprised not by the total size of his CP, but where the hell did he put at least 15 hard disks in the computer case?! My PC case is big but damn, it can't fit more than 8 hard disks, unless I find a way to remove the PSU and go without it. :

They tried this with me when I got caught.  I altered the plea deal when I finally took it, removing all the 'extraneous' stuff they tried to add in.  Idiot prosecutor didn't even read the plea when he got it back, just signed it, so all that went away.  Should have seen how his eyes bulged when he realized I'd just cut the rug out from under him.

There's a lot of drive pooling software out there that will make several different mounted partitions appear as one single partition. A lot of people do this with NAS boxes, so I assume it would be a similar setup. Most general PCs don't have that much room for storage, but a lot of servers do, and they're pretty cheap to buy used, and don't really need to be very fast just to offer up some network-accessible storage.

As others have mentioned, I bet that a lot of it is just a lot of very over-inflated and non-compressed multimedia. For example, if you take a video that was 4 GB, and then transcode it "lossless", you could inflate that video size to well over 30 or 40 gigabytes. Some people don't realize that they're not actually gaining any video quality when they do this.
