It seems recently giftbox exchange is back up. As I understand it even the former admins do not know who is running it, but they did have some access and put up a warning on the actual site. Best guess is that someone restored an old backup inadvertently reviving the site. This means that it is unclear who controls it and whether the site has been compromised. In any case I'd avoid the site.

Albert: Oh, yes, sir. But alcohol sort of compensates for not getting them.

That sounds very odd. But thanks for warning all of us. :-)

Sounds suspiciously like what happened with Playpen. Best to error on the side of caution.

But giftbox already had exploits running once before didn't it? and then they shut down the site as soon as people realized?

The site was compromised and shut down by the admin. Elysium could be seen as a spin off from the giftbox, and we all know how well that went. There is of course a possibility that Elysium was a sting from the beginning as LEA called it an expensive months long investigation. The timing is rather suspicious. The giftbox that appeared seems to be a backup from before it was compromised. At the moment that I am writing this is seems to be down again. It may be booted accidentally. I think you should assume that the complete server and backups are in the hands of LEA.

Interesting, thanks for the additional info.

This is very weird indeed. I haven't heard a word about it from anyone I know in anywhere I trust about this before now. Can you tell where did you get this info?

I was informed that one of the original staff members mentioned it was up and he posted a warning banner on the login page as his login was still valid. I checked and the site was indeed up on the original onion displaying the warning banner to stay away.

On the original onion!? Damn, that's creepy as Hell.

None of the links seem to be working now. I'm still surprised I haven't heard anything about it before. Either the original staff who found this out managed to keep it low or it's just a big rumor.

I would not rule out somebody messing with the VM and bringing it up by accident. As I understand it, it was a prepaid VM at a commercial hoster. It was prepaid for a long period and should still be paid for now. It appears to have been up for a short time only (I guess 1 day) . I wonder if the hoster has figured out what was being hosted, if so one should assume the hoster turned everything over to LEA. It may have been caused by the original admin using the VM for something new as well. We simply do not know what happened or who caused it.
