NEWMARKET — After spending six months locked in a small cell in protective custody, a 19-year-old Orillia woman charged with dozens of sex offences against children and animals has been released on bail.

Kathryn Thompson was released from Newmarket court Monday under strict conditions following a lengthy bail review by Superior Court Justice Myrna Lack.

Last fall, Thompson was charged along with 22-year-old Shayne Lund of Midland, and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Avery Taylor of Orillia, with several counts, including conspiracy to kidnap and drug children, sexually assaulting children and bestiality.

Lund is facing more than 100 counts, while the two women are facing 26 counts each.

It is alleged the women helped Lund get access to children, ages two to 14, through babysitting connections.

The trio had been in protective custody almost since the beginning of their arrest.

For Thompson's lawyer, Angela McLeod, it's been a long haul.

"We have spent six months preparing for this review and I'm glad the judge made the right decision," she said. "(Thompson) has been locked inside a small cell for her own protection."

Thompson was allowed to go home with a surety, who is a family friend, and must remain inside the surety's home 24 hours a day with her present.

"This is the strictest bail terms I have ever had for a client," McLeod said. "She is not allowed to be alone, ever."

Taylor was denied bail following her arrest.

Lund has not had a bail hearing.

The next stage in the case is preparing for a lengthy preliminary hearing that will begin in November.

Crown attorney Indy Kandola has said there are hundreds and thousands of videos, cellphone and computer photographs, movie files and texts that police and counsel are sifting through to prepare for the case.

"I will be going through those and determining which, if any, portion of that is actually child pornography (and), if so, whether or not it has any connection to my client and which portion is legal adult pornography," McLeod said. "It's going to take days and days and days to go through it all."

So far, 36 days have been set aside for a preliminary hearing, which will take up days in November, December, January and possibly February.

If the case goes to trial, it would likely not happen until 2016.

The case will be back in court for a pretrial June 2.

ohboy

I do not believe a sexual relationship between an adult and a child or an animal is necessarily wrong as long as it is desired by both parties.

But from what I read in this news excerpt I have the impression that they were seeking easy targets to abuse. This is sickening, and a behavior very far from what most of us in here stand for. They may not even be pedophiles or zoophiles, but simply sociopaths looking for easy targets to abuse.
