Not wanting to go to jail is a pretty practical reason to avoiding sexual contact with children. I got the impression that they were doing it out of principle.

I do think that abstaining from most things (anything?) out of principle is a tad silly, though I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's self-hating. Unless it's "self-hating" in a softer sense of not allowing yourself to have the pleasure that you actually desire, in which case I would agree.

I mean sure, you could make the argument that odds are that something bad will happen to either you or your partner, but I don't really get the whole drawing a line in the sand to say that you will never do it.
