A committee of the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning the practice of child marriage, for the first time outlining specific steps to address the issue that affects 15 million girls every year across the world.

The resolution comes after the United Nations established last year for the first time that child and forced marriages constitute a violation of human rights and said that ending the practice should be one of the stated goals of the post-2015 development agenda, which will be set next year.

The resolution passed by a committee tasked with human rights issues calls on countries to enact and uphold laws to prevent child marriages and promote girls' education and right to self-determination when it comes to their sexuality.

"The General Assembly urges all states ... to ensure that marriage is entered into only with the informed, free and full consent of the intending spouses," according to the resolution.

It will now go to the full General Assembly for consideration, but its passage in committee is a likely guarantee that it will be approved.

Heather Hamilton, global co-ordinator with the non-profit organisation Girls Not Brides, welcomed the resolution, noting that it shows the international community's concern over the practice that often prevents young girls from getting education.

"The passage of a UN resolution does not mean that we will end child marriage tomorrow, but resolutions are important in setting global norms," Hamilton said in a statement.

"This is a firm statement from the international community that we have to act on child marriage if we're to ensure equality and reduce global poverty."

Women who marry before they turn 18 are more at risk of domestic violence, and are more likely to die or suffer complications in pregnancy or childbirth, according to the UN Children's Fund.

What, you disagree? You're not against equality and human rights, are you? ;) We can't worry about little things like nations having their own cultures. ;)

on the rocks

Cultural relativism only goes so far from my point of view.
Child marriages are almost always arranged and the child, usually a girl, has no say in the matter.  That is objectively unfair.  Of course this would be my opinion of any arranged marriage regardless of the age of the participants.  But marrying off little girls seems especially unfair because they don't even have a chance to consider other alternatives.
Hypothetically, a child who does want to marry brings my opinions about the rights of children to bear and I can see that being a counter-argument to a ban on all child marriage.  But realistically, I don't think that represents a great many examples.

Humans deserve sufficient education to be able to make their own, informed choices in life.  Wherever knowledge is stifled, individuals suffer.
It's never so bad that it can't get worse.

If the UN finally manages to do anything more than endless debate, and actually help in stopping the practice of trading girls like a goat to settle a dispute, I'd say more power to them.
Death: THERE ARE BETTER THINGS IN THE WORLD THAN ALCOHOL, ALBERT.
Albert: Oh, yes, sir. But alcohol sort of compensates for not getting them.

I totally get that you guys are against hurtcore. Clearly any sane definition of "child love" means no torture. That is always wrong. The criminally insane folks at...that other website...had to be opposed. I'm glad they're gone. Anyone who tortures a child should be tortured. No mercy.

...

What I want is this: a young eight-year-old child bride to run around my house and sit on my lap naked. She should be able to get dressed up in nice outfits, with stockings but no underwear underneath her dress. Just like Masha Allen. I would buy her all different outfits, so she could show off. If she wanted, I would put chocolate spread on my cock, and she could lick it off. She would be a spoiled child bride, and watch a lot of TV with her friends, and I would take her to Disney World or something. That's what I'm talking about! :)

Masha and Matthew was almost like a marriage but the media gives her a spotlight so she can bash pedos. There may have been some shit going down there behind the scenes--she claimed he wasn't feeding her enough. I'm not trying to defend him. But in another society, where it's considered OK for a parent to give their permission for a little girl to be married, then who are we to say, well fuck this pedo guy he can't have any pleasure? I think some of these feminists, some of these "human rights activists", they want to lock all pedo cocks with an iron belt.
