I've been quite interested in the idea of shelters from Fallout franchise for years now. Thanks to the tv show, the interest gre further. I wonder if anyone's hyped with the idea of underground shelters like I am.
Anyway, tldr, if you're to design a shelter, what would its structure look like and how does life happen within it (lifestyle, laws, fashion, entertainment, etc)? It could be pedo-centric or not, depends on your preference.
I don't know how far you are in the series or how much you know about the universe, but trust me you do not want to live in a Vault!
____________
Fallout shelters were never much popular were I live, Brazil didn't think making a suicide pact with other nations was a good idea so we aren't really afraid of nuclear war. As MAD don't really target you if you are not already MAD.
But I do enjoy the isolated close circle troupe, well I used to, I always wondered how cool it would be to live in a submarine, research station or in a underground banker. Eventually I came to realize how hard it actually is to live in these situation, you need to do a lot of work besides you own function since you can't depend on outside help. There is always something needing fixing and you can't just go out and buy a new one or call someone to fix it for you.
I have always thought it would be a good story premise. I write a lot of apocalyptic stories and one with a group in a fallout shelter would be prime source material. The sexual tensions, fairness, all that would really rise to the forefront. I'll put it on my list, which means very little in terms of actually doing it, LOL.

Well I've learnt enough to know what Fallout's about, what creatures there are and what factions dominate America after the nuke. And I know that Vault life ain't a dream. But all the incest, the cloning, etc do provide some pretty good post-apocalyptic pedo-centric ideas if you think about it. I can kinda imagine the experiment for this vault being multigenerational breeding, so the environment is most ideal for comfort, romance and sex.
Vaultec does not build nice Vaults, the ones that are nice is because something wrong happened. I can't say much more about it without spoiling but those vaults were not meant to fallout shelters.
So if Vaultec was building those paradise pedo vaults wither you or the kids would have some terrible STD, or maybe the kids would be programed to eat whomever they lost their virginity to, or they would actually be dwarfs disguised as children... something terrible would happen.

I don't know. Each of the vaults are used for extreme human experimentation. They may have been horrors, but that doesn't mean the point was to be a horror. It was science. Many people see pedophilia as a horror in of itself, and we are definitely lacking in data about it. I think on these grounds it would be possible to have a pedo friendly vault. Maybe they are simply testing what happens to kids when they have to endure nonstop orgasms for their entire childhood. Perhaps pumping them full of hormones. I could totally see them building a vault with the potential of going horribly wrong, but then the experiment turns out to be really awesome instead.
I dabbled in this fantasy for a time. Another plot device that let's one get away with things that would land one in deep trouble in regular society.
It was also a go-to because it was an outlet for my disillusionment and frustration with society writ large. When everything seems fucked, it can be comforting the idea of having it all burn while me and my small harem watch from the comfort of our doomsday bunker.
But the reality of surviving some kind of apocalypse in a bunker would undoubtedly suck. Like cabin fever times a thousand.
So bring a lot of books.
What sucks about a real nuclear war is it fucks everyone, not just the actual combatants. "Great, now we can't grow crops because two dumbass countries couldn't figure their shit out." So even if one is thousands of miles from the nearest nuclear blast, you're still likely to need a bunker. :thumbdown

That is how I would see it, and if it was me in that vault, well the worst outcome is I pass away in a vault surrounded by kids. Better to go in there then out in the wasteland.

To be frank, we haven't known all the vaults yet, and we only conclude that vault tec is malevolent from a few vault where they just happens to do bad deed. However, from my understanding, the ultimate goal of vault tec was to experiment without restriction on morality from the public, not that they want to bring humanity to absolute extinction. Moreover a pedo vault could be made to serve important figures, not to contain civilians, so there might not even be an experiment going on, just Vault tec's bosses with their kids. I also remember that there are some control vaults that acts as baseline for the experiments, which are allowed to develop on themselves without being tampered with.
I could swear I made a reply about Valtec last night but it isn't here anymore.
Anyway resuming what I said, Valtec "scientific" motivation was pretty much just a selling point, so they get the money to build the Vaults, Vaultec is just another branch of another group and most Vaults, beside control Vaults weren't really that worried about the science behind their experiments.
It was all about seeing how much you could push a society before it breaks and how long you can keep people in total isolation. Vaultec and most things in the lore have this group behind them and their goals were extremely malicious.
I hate how often in stories bad people are just bad. They don't have much motivation beyond that, and they really aren't relatable, and to me, it just doesn't feel believable. When someone is simply portrayed as a monster, I immediately assume it is just propaganda. Sure, some people get off on the pain of others, but even then it's usually a little more complicated than that. To actually form an organization, and get people working together, you really need something a little deeper to unite you. It drives me crazy how often in a story the bad guys hire an army of goons, that for some reason are willing to sacrifice everything and fight to the death, and the good guys just dispatch them with impunity. Kill all the hirelings, but then give the leader a chance at salvation, then just lock them up. It's a strange world we live in. Perhaps this story is following the same ridiculous trope, but I find that utterly unsatisfying.
Science, that makes sense to me, even if it is done without any morality. Seeing when a society breaks under different extremes, well, that's the pursuit of knowledge, and it's science. Trying to understand when a society breaks by pushing extreme sexuality, that sounds like a useful question to answer, and falls right in line with the other things Vaultec is doing. And maybe it turns out society doesn't break under those conditions after all. Of course, such stories just don't get told in the horror genre. They tried to create a horror, and accidentally created a paradise.
I agree with you Lillab, but it ain't the case, they are incredibly malicious in intent but they do have a motivation beyond cruelty for cruelty sake, a extremely cynic and stupid motivation, but a very realistic one that has happened before in history. This group has appeared in some form already in the show and events related to them have also being mentioned, but since the show is set long past their "fall" I don't think they will go in dept about their goals for the world and specially the US. They are my favorite villains in the games because of how believable they are in their stupid goals, too bad they haven't appeared that much since Fallout 3.
The show appears to be focused on House now, what I am glad he is another good villain.

I have a hunch the Enclave would appear as well. And let's hope we get too see more of the Chinese.

It already did in the beginning even giving us a glimpse of FEV experimentation and hints towards it is everywhere. Though the last know hideout of Enclave power in the wasteland was destroyed in Washington during Fallout 3 DLCs so I can't see the series revealing whatever the next big move by them... but they did killed the NCR on the series so nothing is impossible.
China is a big mystery too, we have people from whats left of the European commonwealth and even the soviets but very few actual Chinese on the games. That would be cool. Most of the world had already ended on the resource wars between Europe and the middle east so the US and China were pretty much the only ones left by the time of the Great War and having the series explore China would greatly expand our knowledge of how the world looked like before ending.

Oh, right. I totally forgot that that scientist was supposed to be an Enclave defect. Though I'm a visual guy so it isn't exactly memorable unless the armor shows up.

I love how he just knew shit about Lucy and everything going on. Cause he is Enclave so he is one of the few that actually understands whats happening. I laughed every time he talked to her.
All I know is if the world comes to an end, all I want is enough time to make some beautiful young virgin a non virgin. With her pleasure in mind of course. If that means somehow squirreling into a Fallout shelter, I'll do it. I do have a couple of prepper friends. I need to keep our friendships close :)
Sadly, I don't think I would last too long in a total collapse. A little longer than some might expect, but not that long.
As for Fallout the show, I like Lucy. She is a hot adult, and unlike some in-show characters, I would tap her in a hot minute.
Preppers and shelter makers are dumb, whatever stationary means of survival you have will eventually fall to others needs. You already have all you need to survive without society, nature made sure to give it to you. All you need to do is relearn how to use your natural skills, if you know how to fish, hunt and gather, where not to go and what not to touch and is at least somewhat able to make a shelter you will probably outlast all preppers just by going away from civilization.
There is a reason camping folk watch preppers shows as a form of entertainment, these people are completely unprepared to live without society.
Always keep moving, avoid people and enjoy yourself, that's how you survive should a nuclear power get mad and chose to end civilization because of reasons.

I love her eyes lol. It expands to half her face in that deathclaw scene. If anything she's born to play funny expressions.
