Title: Amazon's Wheel of Time
Post by: nyarla on 07 November, 2023, 16:25:01
 Gods what a fuck up.
Man they should make a law keeping the classics out of Amazon greedy hands, I was giving the series a chance, I mean the universe of the Wheel of Time works in such a way you can pretty much tell the story in anyway and still be good. So I was mostly pretending that the series was set in a different cycle than the one in the books... The boys were older and the story arcs pretty different, but they were inconsistent within their on story way too much.

And people clapping and cheering the Dragon Reborn is too much even for me.

"Yay! Our mad messiah came back to defeat the abstract evil and DESTROY THE WORLD"
"Cheers for the Dragon finally that world breaking can start!"

Sigh.... Well I should have learned my lesson with the Rings of Power, I would try Foundation next but after this.... Nope.

I'm sorry Amazon is ruining so many of your favorites, but it's not surprising, and it's not just Amazon. Apart from sci-fi and fantasy stuff, Disney has been fucking up great books and stories from the very beginning, and continues to do so today.

As far as the sci-fi and fantasy genres are concerned, my very favorite author is Harry Turtledove, who does the "alternate history" stuff. His books come dangerously close to being perfect. If I heard that Disney or Amazon or Paramount were gonna make a movie or series out of The Guns of the South or the Down to Earth series, I'd vomit. Perhaps those stories could be done properly if Turtledove himself had total creative control and wrote the scripts, but nobody else could do it. I've always been amazed, and thankful, that Hollywood has left Turtledove alone.

I couldn't see it ever working. Alternative history it is by nature to large scale, even the more personal ones like The Man in The High Castle ended up being too much... Amazon did that one too.

I'm complaining too much though at least Amazon did "The Man Who Can't Forget" the song alone tells more of the story of the wheel of time than the series, even though the song is from the series. Fan adaptations are better, so if anyone gets curious listen to them and not to the series original.

I get your complaint, I always prefer the written version to a story than any adaption. As for Wheel of Time I'll admit being engrossed with the early books, but around #7 or #8 my interest died off dramatically, as the overall tone and level of magic in the world had changed. Early on magic seemed a rare and special power, by the time we get into the later novels we have armies of both female and male One Power users. It felt inconsistent with the early wonder and discovery in the early novels.

I prefer this kind of thing remain consistent throughout the story line, as an example, Game of Thrones (as far as written) has followed this fairly well, the level of magic is low and generally remains that way. I don't mind highly magical worlds either, as long as things are consistent. Probably a minor point to many, but major for me.

Yeah it's hard to keep a book series good for to long, stories should have an ending and trying to go for to long only leads to a fall of quality.

I for one believe the Dune series ends with Children of Dune and no one can tell me otherwise.

The upside with book adaptations is you can just read the books instead and ignore the adaptations, and probably still find lots of people to talk about the books only with online if you look hard enough.

That's right. There are at least two "book lovers" sites on the clearnet: Goodreads, which is owned by Amazon, and LibraryThing, which is independent (I think). If you make an account there you can talk with other people, and post your own reviews, etc.  Both sites have many sub-groups where the posting gets more knowledgeable.
